What Is A Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a type of dental restoration designed to cover the entire visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. Crowns are often used to protect heavily restored teeth, teeth at risk of fracture, teeth weakened from endodontic treatment (root canal) or teeth that are severely damaged due to decay or injury. Dental crowns may also be used to support dental bridges that replace missing teeth.

Contemporary vs Conventional Crown Methods

At our Cleveland surgery, we can provide dental crowns on-site the same day of your appointment, using state of the art equipment; Dentsply' CEREC Milling and Grinding machine. At our Capalaba surgery, we can provide off-site crowns staggered over two appointments; with the first appointment prepping the tooth for the dental restoration, and the second appointment cementing the dental restoration in place.

Steps of On-Site Dental Crowns

The procedure for an on-site dental crown typically starts with a consultation with our team. During the consultation, our team will examine the tooth and decide if it is suitable for restorative treatment. Following the consultation, our team at our Cleveland surgery will firstly numb the area around the tooth receiving the dental restoration. Then, the visible part of the tooth is prepped and shaped so that it is able to receive the dental crown. Unlike conventional impression trays, the digital CEREC scanner is then used to generate precise 3D images in natural colour. After analysing the complete scan, our team utilises CEREC's ingenious software to develop the dental crown. In its development stage, the dental crown is both milled and ground down before it is sintered. Finally, our team will glaze the dental crown, make adjustments if needed, before cementing it on the exposed tooth.
